The Golden Circles

Finding your Why

Simon Sinek's Golden Circle is one of the most powerful frameworks for understanding the heart of a business. It moves from the outside in — from what you do, to how you do it, to the deeper reason behind it all. Your Why is the foundation everything else is built on.

The Secret Garden

Connecting to your higher self

The first part of the framework is called the Secret Garden because it is quite intimate, and I'll tell you right now — you don't have to share everything that comes up with me. The point of the exercise is to come up with a vision board.

A vision board is a tool for visualising and representing your dream life and dream business. Your higher self.

Take a moment to write down up to 10 goals in building (or changing) your business, whether that is the impact on your personal or professional life. Then imagine your life afterwards — write everything in the present tense, as if it has already happened.

You don't have to share this text with me — it's mostly for you! But if you feel like it's important for me to see it, I'll honour it.
Your Vision Your goals & life afterwards — in the present tense, as if it has already happened.
Your Vision Board When you have finished the exercise above, create your vision board on Pinterest — I find it the easiest. Type keywords that correspond to the things you want to attract in your life and business, as well as colours, emotions, places…

You can keep your board secret and share only the link with me.

The Dragonfly Inn

Building your dream business

This part of the framework is very powerful to push your vision further and to nail down the details of your business. It's essentially what you've been told to do before — but better, in a more comprehensive way.

If you're familiar with Gilmore Girls, you know that the Dragonfly Inn is the inn Lorelai buys with her best friend to build their dream business. I want you to picture your own Dragonfly Inn. This is adapted from a metaphor by Seth Godin.

Imagine your brand is a hotel. What does your hotel look like? Is it a bed and breakfast, an inn, something else entirely? How does it feel? Start picturing all of this — then answer the questions below.
The Guests Who are your guests? (= your audience)
The Discovery Where did they find out about your hotel? (= marketing)
The Choice Why did they choose your hotel? (= unique factor / value proposition / essence)
The Appearance What does your hotel look like? (= vibe / visual identity)
The Location Where is it located? (= market, visual identity, essence)
The Welcome How does the staff welcome the guests? (= brand experience & personality)
The Offerings What can your guests do? (= services / offerings / products)
The Story They Tell What do the guests tell their friends after they return home? (= essence)

The Alethiometer

Finding your truth

To create a brand identity that suits you and radiates your inner self and core values — while attracting your people — one part of the Heart Library framework is the Alethiometer.

If you're not familiar with Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy (I highly recommend it!), the alethiometer is a kind of compass, a symbol reader that tells the truth. And the truth I need from you is well hidden within your soul.

To unearth it, I offer you two ways, depending on what resonates and feels more comfortable:

Option A — A mixture of everything you love aesthetically (not just visually): images, colours, books, paintings, films, furniture, eras, architecture…

Option B — Focus on one vivid memory of your life, which will allow us to draw visual and graphic elements — and especially emotions — from it. A moment (which may have lasted a second or years) that was defining or pivotal. A time when you felt something special that changed or helped you become who you are today.

Option B takes more soul-searching and is more vulnerable — but it's also the strongest, in my opinion.

Two examples of Soul Stories:

Mine — A long period when I was a child spending time with my grandmother and family. Her house was a place full of emotions and memories where I was fully myself. I used textures, colours, and emotions from those memories in creating my own visual identity — and it shapes how I want my space to feel for my audience.

A client's — On a trip to England as a teenager, a little while after her brother's death, she walks alone at night in the dark, mist-filled back streets. Under a lamppost in the middle of the city, she sees a fox. That moment overwhelmed her — and became pivotal in her grief. We used elements of this memory for the name of her brand Coeur de Brume (heart of mist) and for her entire visual identity.

A few tips: first make a list of memories where you felt really good. Think about the environment — even if it wasn't aesthetically beautiful, are there rich and usable elements? Choose the memory that is most obvious and visually / emotionally rich to you. Then create a Pinterest board with images that refer to your memory and share it with me.

Guided Meditation I know it can feel elusive at first. I created a guided meditation to make it easier — take a moment to listen before you write.

Understanding
Who You Are

The deeper layer

There is one thing I love asking my clients to do — but there's absolutely no obligation. It's one more tool I like to use to understand who you are as a person, on a deeper level.

There are two personality assessments that can help me. If you take the tests, please voice note or email me your results directly at hello@soulspellstudio.com — or paste your reflections below.
